Foundations Development Directorate (FDD) hosted a UC Talk titled “Category Theory as a Multi-Purpose Language”, on Wednesday, March 4, 2026.
The talk by Dr. Matteo Paganin received substantial interest from Sabancı University students and faculty. The event also welcomed high school students from Gebze Tübitak Fen Lisesi and Mustafa Saffet Fen Lisesi, who visited Sabancı University Campus as part of the Ghost Student Program; a joint initiative of FDD and Marketing and Institutional Communications Directorate.

Dr. Paganin walked the audience through the origins of category theory, first introduced in 1945 by Samuel Eilenberg and Saunders Mc Lane, and how what started as a niche mathematical language has since found a surprising home in fields as varied as computer science, linguistics, and even research on perception and consciousness.
The talk contributed to FDD’s broader mission to build scientific fluency and curiosity across disciplines and levels, and offered the visiting students the opportunity for an early encounter to university life and academics.
